END TIMES PREDICTIONS - WITH SCRIPTURES

From the Gospel:

Matthew 24

1 And Jesus went out from the temple, and was going on his way; and his disciples came to him to show him the buildings of the temple.

2 But he answered and said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.

3 And as he sat on the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man lead you astray.

5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am the Christ; and shall lead many astray.

6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars; see that ye be not troubled: for these things must needs come to pass; but the end is not yet.

7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there shall be famines and earthquakes in divers places.

8 But all these things are the beginning of travail.

9 Then shall they deliver you up unto tribulation, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all the nations for my name's sake.

10 And then shall many stumble, and shall deliver up one another, and shall hate one another.

11 And many false prophets shall arise, and shall lead many astray.

12 And because iniquity shall be multiplied, the love of the many shall wax cold.

13 But he that endureth to the end, the same shall be saved.

14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world for a testimony unto all the nations; and then shall the end come.

15 When therefore ye see the abomination of desolation, which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let him that readeth understand),

16 then let them that are in Judaea flee unto the mountains:

17 let him that is on the housetop not go down to take out things that are in his house:

18 and let him that is in the field not return back to take his cloak.

19 But woe unto them that are with child and to them that give suck in those days!

20 And pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on a sabbath:

21 for then shall be great tribulation, such as hath not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, nor ever shall be.

This section (Matthew 24:15-21) seems to be parallel to a passage from Luke 20:21-24:

20 But when ye see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that her desolation is at hand.
21 Then let them that are in Judaea flee unto the mountains; and let them that are in the midst of her depart out; and let not them that are in the country enter therein.  22 For these are days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.
23 Woe unto them that are with child and to them that give suck in those days! for there shall be great distress upon the land, and wrath unto this people.
24 And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led captive into all the nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.

Numerous scholars have indicated these passages referred to the coming invasion by the Roman army of Vespasian during the Jewish-Roman war as reported by Josephus in his book Wars of the Jews.  The civil war occurred between 66-70 CE (Christian Era).  The Romans set up siege walls and towers around Jerusalem and kept the city within the range of its catapults and dart throwers until the many in the city died.  This warning to flee upon sighting the Roman army attempting to surround Jerusalem was given in order to permit believers to flee to safe refuge without hesitation.  The fall of Jerusalem was not the end of the world.

Matthew 24:

22 And except those days had been shortened, no flesh would have been saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.

23 Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is the Christ, or, Here; believe it not.

24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.

25 Behold, I have told you beforehand.

26 If therefore they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the wilderness; go not forth: Behold, he is in the inner chambers; believe it not.

27 For as the lightning cometh forth from the east, and is seen even unto the west; so shall be the coming of the Son of man.

28 Wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.

29 But immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

30 and then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

31 And he shall send forth his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

In the gospel Christ's second coming is likened to lightening coming from the east and flashing across the entire sky in a moment, with the powers of heaven being shaken.  There were various astronomical observations that might occur with regularity such as eclipses of the sun and moon, and meteors streaking across the sky.

Peter wrote a prophesy about the end of the world in one of his letters:

2 Peter 3

8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.
9
The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
10
But the day of the Lord will come like a thief [with stealth, not predictable]. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.
11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives.
12
As you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.
13
But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.

Peter indicated the earth and its elements would disappear, the heavens too.  Peter testified that God will create a new world.

Luke reiterated Matthew's testimony:

Luke 17

20 And being asked by the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God cometh, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation:
21 neither shall they say, Lo, here! or, There! for lo, the kingdom of God is within you.
22 And he said unto the disciples, The days will come, when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and ye shall not see it.
23 And they shall say to you, Lo, there! Lo, here! go not away, nor follow after them:
24 for as the lightning, when it lighteneth out of the one part under the heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall the Son of man be in his day.
25 But first must he suffer many things and be rejected of this generation.
26 And as it came to pass in the days of Noah, even so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.
27 They ate, they drank, they married, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.
28 Likewise even as it came to pass in the days of Lot; they ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded;
29 but in the day that Lot went out from Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all:
30 after the same manner shall it be in the day that the Son of man is revealed.
31 In that day, he that shall be on the housetop, and his goods in the house, let him not go down to take them away: and let him that is in the field likewise not return back.
32 Remember Lot's wife.
33 Whosoever shall seek to gain his life shall lose it: but whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it.
34 I say unto you, In that night there shall be two men on one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left.
35 There shall be two women grinding together; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left.
36 There shall be two men in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left.
37 And they answering say unto him, Where, Lord? And he said unto them, Where the body is, thither will the eagles also be gathered together.

The story of a catastrophic flood or a volcanic type firestorm such as at Pompeii [allegorically Sodom & Gomorrah] were inferred as comparisons to the end of the world.  Like the end of the world, these things are impossible for some to survive without divine intervention.

Some have written details about events that might destroy earth.  There were rumors of a probable asteroid collision or comet collision, yet these things do not happen without some advance warning.  There are forecasts for the sun to become a red giant within a few billion years and grow to such a size that it the oceans would boil away in time.  This event is not as sudden as lightening strike nor as hidden from view as a thief.  There is an occurrence that has been happening in the universe for billions of years in the form of stars collapsing and exploding in gamma-ray bursts of the supernova.  They occurred from random directions all over the universe, and at random times.  If a star in the Milky Way Galaxy were to explode, it might shine many times brighter than the sun and strip away the earth's atmosphere within a few seconds.  By one estimate there are 350 billion stars in the Milky Way Galaxy.  The probability of a distant death of a star destroying the world seems low, yet there are many events yet to occur not known to us beforehand.

If Jesus will not return and if God will not create a new world, then no one on earth will be saved.  God will save those who God is pleased with.  Some event that shakes the heavens such as a supernova or a big bang is an ongoing threat to the physical nature of life on earth.  Only through knowledge of God who Jesus testified about might one be saved.

According to Luke 21:

25 "There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.
26 Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.
27 At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
28
When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near."
